The U.S.S. Liberty was an electronic intelligence-gathering ship that was cruising international waters off the Egyptian coast on June 8, 1967. Israeli planes and torpedo boats opened fire on the Liberty in the midst of what became known as the Israeli-Arab Six-Day War. Thirty-four Americans were killed and more than 170 were wounded in the attack.
"The Loss of Liberty" investigates whether the attack was a case of mistaken identity as both the U.S. and Israel claimed, or something more sinister. Hear eyewitness testimony from surviving crew members and interviews with distinguished military personnel and ambassadors.
The film interviews Israeli officers along with U.S. servicemen. Not mentioned in this film is that recently the white house council during the event, not retired, and took the initiative to support the accusations of Washington/Israeli cover-up. While, not stating that the Israel government today is the same as the one in 1967, this film does raise an interesting question. Why would the United States cover up on behalf of Israel the death of its own soldiers?
