Channel 4 | Dispatches | Chechnya - The Dirty War 2005 - 60 min.

Director: Marcin Mamon, Mariusz Pilis
Synopsis:

What is going on in Chechnya? Why are Chechen rebels committing acts of terrorism in Russia? And why are they complaining of the murdering of civilians by the Russians?

They concluded that the Chechen war, which began in 1994 as a separatist movement has evolved into actions that are now perceived as terrorism.

After years of combat in Chechnya, the government in Moscow continued to prevent media correspondence from telling the true story of the conflict. In fact, any contact with Chechen resistance forces were considered to be illegal. Human Rights Watch reported in 2004 that some 1,700 individuals had thus far disappeared without a trace in Chechnya and that illegal killing was a common occurrence.
